Tullum DOCG

Tollo, on the hills between Chieti and the sea, is a village of vineyards. One of Italy’s smallest appellations was born here: Tullum, or Terre Tollesi, which became a DOCG in 2019. It includes a Montepulciano red and two native whites, Pecorino and Passerina.

The product

What Tullum is

The appellation of Tollo’s wines.

Tullum, or Terre Tollesi, is the appellation of the wines of Tollo. Created as a DOC in 2008, it became a DOCG in 2019: it is one of Italy’s smallest, with a few hectares of selected vineyards.

It includes a red made almost entirely from Montepulciano (at least 95%), also as a Riserva, and two whites from native grapes: Pecorino and Passerina.

Territory

Where it comes from

Tollo lies on the hills of the province of Chieti, a few kilometres from the Adriatic, in one of Abruzzo’s most planted areas. The DOCG vineyards have been divided into small plots according to soil and exposure.

From field to table

How it is made

  1. The grapes are harvested by hand or machine, depending on the plot, between September and October.
  2. Montepulciano ferments with the skins; Pecorino and Passerina are made as whites.
  3. The red matures in steel and wood; the Riserva for longer.
  4. Some producers also age Pecorino in terracotta amphorae.
In the kitchen

How to use it

Reds and whites for the whole of Abruzzo cooking.

  • The red with lamb, arrosticini and cheese
  • The Pecorino with raw fish and fish stew
  • The Passerina with starters and vegetables
  • The red served at 16–18 °C, the whites at 10–12 °C
Tips

How to choose and store it

  • On the label look for «Tullum» or «Terre Tollesi» DOCG and the government strip.
  • Tullum Pecorino improves for a few years in the bottle.
  • Store bottles in a dark, cool place.
  • In Tollo you can visit the wineries and taste all the types.
Good to know: the main producer is Cantina Tollo, with its Feudo Antico line, born on vineyards where the remains of a Roman villa came to light.

Tradition

History and trivia

Tollo has a long history of wine: in 2003, while preparing the ground for a new vineyard, the remains of a Roman villa were found, with rooms linked to wine making.

The Terre Tollesi or Tullum appellation was created as a DOC in 2008 and promoted to DOCG in 2019, the first promotion of an Italian DOC in several years.

Did you know? some ancient amphorae found in the excavations inspired a Pecorino aged in amphora.
