What Villamagna DOC is
The small appellation of Villamagna’s Montepulciano.
Villamagna DOC is a red wine made from at least 95% Montepulciano, as Rosso and Riserva. The appellation was created in 2011 to promote the hill vineyards around the village.
It is a small DOC, with few producers, including the village cooperative and some family wineries. It is protected by the Consorzio Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo.
Territory
Where it comes from
The area covers the whole territory of Villamagna and part of Vacri and Bucchianico, on the hills between Chieti and the Majella. North-facing land and low valley floors near the streams are excluded.
From field to table
How it is made
- Montepulciano grapes are harvested fully ripe, usually in October.
- The must ferments with the skins to extract colour and structure.
- The wine matures in steel, concrete or wood.
- The Riserva ages longer before release.
In the kitchen
How to use it
A red for meat and home cooking.
- With lamb and arrosticini
- With pasta with ragù and cavatelli
- With aged cheeses and cured meats
- Served at 16–18 °C
Tips
How to choose and store it
- On the label look for «Villamagna DOC».
- The Riserva can age for several years.
- Store bottles lying down, in the dark and cool.
- Visit the village wineries to taste the different Villamagna wines.
Good to know: as a small appellation, Villamagna is found mainly at the local wineries and in a few specialist wine shops.
