Sanctuary of the Madonna d’Appari – Paganica

Travelling through Abruzzo, today we went to the sanctuary of the Madonna d’Appari. Yes, it is true, this is not a new place to discover but "only" a small church among the mountains... but that makes it no less magical; quite the contrary... it is a truly wonderful place. A national monument since 1902

Travelling through Abruzzo, today we went to the sanctuary of the Madonna d’Appari. Yes, it is true, this is not a new place to discover but "only" a small church among the mountains... but that makes it no less magical; quite the contrary... it is a truly wonderful place. Here too I have not gone far from home (let’s say ten kilometres, at most!!!), as the place in question lies about halfway between Paganica and Camarda. The road is one of my favourites, a real mountain road surrounded by rock and, at its most beautiful point, where a passage has been cut into the rock and the mountain towers overhead, stands our little church. It is a fairy-tale place... a footpath (walkers only) runs beside the road we came on and leads right to the front of the church. It follows a stream and a small slope that has been turned into a beautifully kept garden, a prelude to the forceful return of the mountain. It is so lovely that every Christmas a nativity scene is placed in this little corner, a joy to behold, especially in the evening when it is all lit up and creates a very evocative atmosphere. At the end of the path you reach, as I said, the church. The rather spartan exterior is already beautiful... probably thanks in part to the surroundings... but the real surprise comes on entering... Getting in is not easy, because on ordinary days it stays closed, being used for ceremonies or for Mass on feast days. But if you happen to find it open, it is a real joy for the eyes. It is a tiny church, completely frescoed, which was damaged by the 2009 earthquake and given back after the repair works. Inside there is also a precious organ, which can be played during services only with special permission. Back outside, walking round the church, you discover that the stream forms a small, charming waterfall, the finishing touch to this fairy-tale landscape.
