The Gran Sasso d’Italia on skis

Travelling through Abruzzo, we went to visit Campo Imperatore, a ski resort whose construction dates back to 1936: today it has a cable car and two state-of-the-art detachable chairlifts.
Once at the top of the Scindarella, at 2199 m, you can ski down towards the Fossa di Paganica and Valle Fredda down to Fonte Cerreto, or by the Tre Valloni along the line of the cable car.
But that is not all. At Fonte Vetica, on the Castel del Monte side, you can make several outings on skis, strictly touring skis, towards the mountains around the Campo Imperatore plain.
Careful with this last destination: the road to Fonte Vetica is often closed. To find out whether it is open, check the Facebook page of the municipality of Castel del Monte.
If there is snow you can set off on skis or snowshoes directly from Castel del Monte.

Campo Imperatore is a ski resort whose construction dates back to 1936: today it has a cable car and two state-of-the-art detachable chairlifts.
The area is run by the Centro Turistico del Gran Sasso d’Italia, and the cable car was recently modernised thanks to an extraordinary grant of 3.5 million euros given by the Civil Protection to the municipality.
In the past the resort has been the subject of disputes over a possible expansion into other high valleys, and the dispute is still ongoing.
We hope these problems will be overcome and that the Campo Imperatore resort can attract and revive tourism for the city and for Abruzzo in general, in a way that respects nature and the natural beauty of our region.
On this subject, all tourists are asked not to throw paper and leftovers away in the mountains: this practice is absolutely reprehensible and shows the poor civic sense of the people who visit our mountains.
The pictures on this page show the beauty to be admired from Campo Imperatore and on some off-piste routes such as Valle Fredda, a valley next to Campo Imperatore that sadly still holds the Fossa di Paganica lifts, abandoned ski lifts that nobody has ever bothered to remove and that today are the result of the reckless management of winter tourism in Abruzzo in past years, as is the abandonment of the Monte Cristo lifts, also run by the municipality of L’Aquila.
We hope this situation too can change in the years to come.
