Introduction

  • One of the most beautiful valleys of the PNALM Val Fondillo is an iconic valley of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park: ancient beech forests, crystal-clear waters, rich wildlife and trails suitable for everyone.

Access and general information

  • Starting point Val Fondillo parking area (5 km from Pescasseroli), elevation 1,080 m. Regulated access during high season.
  • Recommended period Hiking: April–November • Snowshoeing: December–March • Ski mountaineering: only with stable snow.
  • Services in the valley Information point, seasonal refreshment area, tables, relaxation areas, marked trails.

Main hiking routes

  • Trail F2 – Basic route Easy • 6 km round trip • 150 m ascent • 2h Classic route along the Fondillo stream, perfect for families.
  • Fairies’ Cave Easy • 4 km round trip • 1h30 Short and scenic route leading to a charming natural cave.
  • Fondillo Springs Moderate • 8 km round trip • 3h Route leading to the crystal-clear springs of the valley.
  • Passo Cavuto Pass Moderate • 12 km round trip • 4–5h Longer but non-technical route, panoramic and very scenic.
  • Val Fondillo Loop – Forca Resuni Hard • 18 km • 900 m ascent • 7–8h Challenging high-altitude hike with views of Mount Marsicano.

Snowshoeing

  • Snowshoeing F2 – Basic snowy route Easy • 2h Safe route, perfect for beginners.
  • Snowshoeing to the springs Moderate • 3h Scenic route through silent forests and powdery snow.
  • Nature snowshoeing Easy/Moderate • 2–3h Guided outings focused on winter wildlife tracks and signs.
  • Night snowshoeing Moderate • 2h30 Magical moonlit experience, always with authorized guides.

Ski mountaineering

  • Val Fondillo – Forca Resuni Hard • ~900 m ascent • 5–6h Route for expert ski mountaineers, with a technical descent.
  • Passo Cavuto – Monte Amaro di Opi Hard • ~1,000 m ascent • 6–7h Long and demanding route, requiring excellent technique.
  • Cima di Fondillo (variant) Hard • variable Little-frequented route, only with perfect conditions.

Wildlife and nature

  • A valley of exceptional biodiversity Possible sightings of deer, roe deer, foxes, woodpeckers and, more rarely, wolf tracks and presence of the Marsican brown bear.

  • Hiking equipment Hiking boots, trekking poles, 1.5L water, windproof jacket, GPS or outdoor app.
  • Snowshoeing equipment Snowshoes, poles, gaiters, thermal gloves, microspikes in case of ice.
  • Ski mountaineering equipment Skis with skins, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe, helmet, technical clothing.
  • Safety Check weather and snow conditions, stay on marked trails, avoid steep slopes with fresh snow.

The small village of Opi lies at about 1250 meters above sea level, halfway between Pescasseroli and Barrea. It is one of the most characteristic places in the area, known for its well-equipped summer campsites and for Val Fondillo, a natural site of great interest within the Abruzzo National Park.
