General description

A spectacular itinerary linking the historic Val di Rose with the ridge of Forca Resuni and the descent towards Opi. Open views, Apennine chamois, and high‑altitude environments make this trek one of the most iconic in the PNALM.

Limited access: from 27 July to 8 September, booking is mandatory to enter Val di Rose.
Stages

Detailed itinerary

1) Civitella Alfedena → Val di Rose (I1)

Steady ascent, open views, and frequent chamois sightings.

  • Time: 2h30–3h
  • Sunny exposure in the central section

2) Val di Rose → Forca Resuni (1952 m)

The steepest but most panoramic section, across high‑altitude grasslands.

  • Time: 45–60 min
  • Unstaffed shelter nearby

3) Forca Resuni → Monte Amaro di Opi

Wide ridge with views over Camosciara, Val Fondillo, and Opi.

  • Time: ~1h
  • Area frequented by chamois

4) Monte Amaro di Opi → Opi

Long but regular descent, first along the ridge and then through the forest.

  • Time: 1h30–2h
Safety

Tips and warnings

  • Bring water: no sources along the route.
  • Avoid very hot days: exposed ascent.
  • In fog, the ridge requires good navigation skills.
  • Hiking boots required.

How to organize

Recommended to leave one car in Opi and reach Civitella with a second vehicle. Bus connections are limited.

The classic ascent of Val di Rose, one of the Park’s most famous routes.

2) Val di Rose → Detour to Passo dell’Orso

From the upper part of the valley, before the climb to Forca Resuni, take the marked detour to Passo dell’Orso.

  • Time: 30–40 min
  • Clear trail, moderate incline

3) Passo dell’Orso (~1900 m)

A panoramic pass overlooking the Camosciara, Lake Barrea, Val di Rose, and surrounding ridges.

  • Ideal spot for chamois observation
  • Possible strong winds

4) Return to Civitella (loop)

From the pass, descend toward the forest and return to Civitella along a shaded, regular path.

  • Time: 2h–2h30

Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park – Val Di Rose, a splendid hiking route of about 4 hours that from Civitella Alfedena takes us up to around 1900 meters at the summit. Starting altitude about 1150 meters. Medium difficulty. Possible sightings of chamois. Several route options available from Civitella Alfedena to Opi.

Type of route: Trekking for hikers (Difficulty E – Medium), Hiking times: to Passo Cavuto 2:50 h, to Forca Resumi 3:30 h, full loop about 6 h. Starting point: near the fountain of Civitella Alfedena, just above the village, where there is also a large parking area. A map is recommended. Pets not allowed. In July and August, access is regulated with a limited number: booking with the Park Authority is mandatory and a guide will be assigned.
