Origins & identity

History of Pescara

From Roman roots to a modern city.

The area of Pescara was already inhabited in Roman times under the name Aternum, an important commercial port on the Adriatic.

During the Middle Ages, it developed as a fortified village before becoming a strategic center within the Kingdom of Naples.

Modern Pescara emerged in the 20th century, following the unification of Pescara and Castellamare Adriatico and the post‑war reconstruction.

Curiosity: Gabriele d’Annunzio played a key role in shaping the city’s cultural identity.
